What would LOVE do? by Kenny Toh, February 2007

On Friday afternoon, with one kid in school and the other playing at his friends’ house, my wife and I decided to do something that we used to do a lot before we became parents. We sneaked out the house, crawled into the front seats of our car and headed for the cinema.

A friend had recommended that we watch ‘Conversations with God’, a movie based on Neale Donald Walsch’s bestselling books of the same title. The show wasn’t exactly entertaining, but it did give me several things to ponder about. I also took away a simple yet powerful question, one that is tremendously useful especially when I’m in doubt about what I should be doing. The question was:

What would LOVE do?

Now, that isn’t the same as “What would I do if I love someone?” or “What would I do for someone I love?”  I take it as an invitation for us to BE love, to reconnect with the essence of our being, and to express ourselves freely. In doing so, we become a manifestation of love. In other words, it’s about asking ourselves, “What would I do if I AM love?” And what exactly is LOVE?

In one part of the movie, when the character Neale was asked about how he would state God’s message in one paragraph, he answered in five words: “You’ve got me all wrong.” I’m not sure if we have got it all wrong with God, but I believe many people have got LOVE all wrong. Just look at the conflict frequently observed between lovers or parents and their children. Is love something to be earned through the meeting the expectations or satisfaction of certain conditions? And what is the deal with unconditional love? Does its opposite (i.e. conditional love) even exist?

Perhaps, to really ‘know’ love, we need to be aware of the barriers are preventing us from experiencing love in our hearts. What are these barriers?
What’s really stopping you from being and experiencing LOVE? Could it be fear or doubt? Are you prepared to unlearn what you have learnt about LOVE and re-experience it with a child-like wonder?
